Bhadrachalam (Andhra Pradesh): Sree Seetaramachandra Swamy temple, a popular shrine, situated on the bank of River Godavari, may soon be underwater.
The government is planning to build the Polavaram irrigation project on the Godavari River. The priests of the temple are a worried lot.
"If the project is built then the water will come till the feet of Sri Ram. This temple will be submerged and also the entire town," Chief Priest Sri Ram temple, Ramchandracharya, says.
The proposed project will irrigate 7.27 lakh acres of land. It is estimated that some 1,17,000 people will be displaced and more than 250 villages will be submerged when the project takes shape. Devotees demand that Government should ensure that Sri Ram temple is safe.
"When the people in the village are going to be doomed, no project can survive. So first criteria should be that it should not create any calamity amongst the people," a devotee, S Dayanidhi says.
But authorities feel that fears expressed by the priests and villagers are unfounded.
"This is not true. Bhadrachalam will not submerge because of the project," Irrigation Minister,Andhra Pradesh, P Laxmayya says.
