Three babies born in Nandigram amid violence

Nandigram, West Bengal: The 10-month-long nightmare in Nandigram took many lives and rendered thousands homeless.

But amid the cacophony of voices raised in protest, are the cries of three new-born babies, which have been born to Nandigram victims.

Three girls were born on Monday, in the same hospital where, in a stark contrast, 14 bodies had been brought in on March 14 after police firing.

The parents, who have been left homeless because of the recent violence, shudder at the thought of taking their baby back with them.

Srabonti Jana, whose daughter has been named Hasi (laughter), says, "What will happen if our land is taken, if again violence intensifies? Where will we go with this baby? We are terrified."

The story is similar for the others as well.

Most of the injured have no place to go, leave alone new-borns.

Nandigram Hospital's Head Matron, Kalpana Bol, is happy for the new-borns but is troubled.

"Where am I bringing them," she asks. "This place is not worth living for these new flowers. My heart is crying for them," she says.
