3 dead cops become icons in fighting Naxals

New Delhi: In another boost in the war against Naxals, the story of three cops in Orissa has become an inspiration for many others. It is of greater significance, especially at a time when the morale of security men facing Naxals in the state is at all time low.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Naryan Pradhan, Havildar Rajendra Mahanto and Constable Gomha Hembram are inspirations to the people now.

Hadn't it been for the brave sacrifice of these three Orissa policemen, former MP and Mayurbhanj district president of JMM, Sudam Marandi wouldn't be alive now.

The policemen jumped to his rescue when ten armed Naxals attacked Marandi after a local football match.

They were killed in the exchange of fire but by then Marandi had enough time to escape into the crowd.

Sudam Marandi, former MP, JMM.

"I cannot forget the sacrifice of these three policemen for the rest of my life. Had they not been there, I would have been a dead man now. I will do my best to take care of the families of the martyrs."

Their act of bravery didn't go unnoticed. All three names have been recommended for bravery awards.

SP, Mayurbhanj Dayal Gangwar said,"We are proud of their sacrifice and would not leave the criminals who have done this dastardly act."

More than a hundred and fifty security personnel have been killed in Orissa ever since Naxal violence started in 2001. In comparison, only 31 Naxals have died so far. But the bravery of martyrs like these inspires the police force to keep the fight going.
