New Delhi: In Malaysia, the crackdown on ethnic Indian activists continues as authorities there detained five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) activists under the Internal Security Act (ISA) on Thursday.
Of those arrested, P Uthayakumar, along with two others, had been charged with sedition on Tuesday.
Malaysia’s ISA is a controversial anti-terror law which permits detention for up to two years without trial.
On November 25, ethnic Indians had staged their biggest anti-government protest in Malaysia. Thousands of protestors braved tear gas and water cannons to raise their voice against alleged racial discrimination.
31 other ethnic Indians have since been charged with murder.
Mostly Tamils, the protestors are the descendants of 19th Century indentured labourers who worked for British colonists. They comprise nearly eight per cent of the Malaysian population and most of them earn low incomes and work in menial jobs.
