Three states grapple with floods

New Delhi: Floods situation across the three states – Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh worsened as rivers overflow.

Surat submerged

India's diamond capital Surat is the worst affected and it’s likely to get worse after the 1500 hrs high tide.

Entire Surat city - hub of India’s diamond and textile trading is submerged - over one lakh people moved to safer places as army carried out rescue operations.

Gujarat remains the worst hit of all the flood-struck states. Floods have claimed 24 lives in Gujarat so far and the situation in Surat is likely to get worse with the release of water from the Ukai dam.

The army conducted rescue operations at Randed, Katarganj and Nehru bridge areas of Surat on Wednesday. A massive evacuation process is on in Vadodara district as well, where the Vishwamitri river is inching towards the danger mark.

Though it hasn’t rained in Surat since last night, water levels have not receded as yet and it will be a while before residents can hope for some respite.

110 dead in Andhra

In Andhra Pradesh at least 110 are dead, thousands marooned, and over one lakh people have been evacuated.

Losses due to floods are estimated at Rs 1100 crore. More than 5,000 villages are flooded.

5 lakh cusec of water will be released from the Srisailam dam on Wednesday, which could lead to further flooding downstream.

Mumbai is getting back to normalcy

Rivers continue to be in spate in Maharashtra. River Godavari is still flowing 3 to 4 feet above the danger mark at Nanded where more than 80 villages are under water.

The situation in Nashik continues to be grim after it received 220 mm of rain in the last 24 hours alone.

The Aurangabad-Nashik highway has been washed away and sugarcane and wine yards have been damaged.

The low-lying areas of the city are flooded and about a thousand families have been evacuated.

But, with no overnight rainfall Mumbai is returning to normalcy.
