Ahmedabad: A three-day-old baby boy admitted in the neo-natal ICU of Sharada Bhen Hospital died when a fire broke out as a result of a short circuit early on Wednesday morning.
There were seven babies in the incubator of which four had been removed for feeding.
Workers of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run hospital managed to save two of the three remaining babies who were in the incubator, but the third one tragically succumbed to burn injuries. The others were shifted to LG Hospital.
The hospital authorities claim they did their best to save the infants.
“We tried to save all the babies but it is sad we couldn’t save one,” said hospital employee, Prahlad Gohil.
Meanwhile, civic authorities have launched an investigation.
“Malfunction of the heating unit of the incubator caused the short circuit,” said Municipal Commissioner I P Goutam. “We'll enquire into the matter, faulty machines will be removed and the family will be compensated according to the rules.”
