Auckland: Martin Guptill, the New Zealand opener, has been ruled out of the remainder of the England series with a persistent thumb injury that requires surgery. New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Thursday that Guptill had suffered ligament damage to his left thumb during practice earlier this month and needs to go under the knife.

"We felt it was best to get Martin right for the tour to England in May and June, so the next couple of months were seen as the best window to have the surgery," said New Zealand physiotherapist Paul Close.

Guptill now faces a lay-off of between six to eight weeks and will target a return to the national side when New Zealand tour England in May. He will not feature in Saturday's ODI series decider owing to a hamstring pull on Wednesday though he returned to hit the winning runs in the series opener.

Hamish Rutherford will replace Guptill in the squad for the three Test matches against England.
