New Delhi: They say history repeats itself but for Bollywood revisiting old classics has become a ticket to instant hype.
The big screen Santoshi Maa is back complete with the suffering heroine's undying faith, the tyrannous in-laws and the solah shukravaar ke vrat.
The original top grosser in 1975 is perhaps the first Indian "cult" film with audiences leaving their footwear outside cinema halls. But what needs to seen is will the remake match up to the original Jai Santoshi Maa?
A cult movie of another kind, Sholay, too, has interested director Ram Gopal Varma who is hoping that the curry western remake will bail him out of his rumoured financial floundering.
So, Urmila Matondkar will do the Helen jig, Ajay Devgan is Veeru, Esha Doel is Basanti and Mohanlal is Thakursaab. While Bachchan is doing a Gabbar, SRK is attempting a Bachchan in a brand new version of Don.
Director Farhan Akhtar is unplugging high-end effects and designer wear but will Shah Rukh Khan manage to pull of a Khaihke paan banaras wala? Well, we will have to wait and watch.
Meanwhile, Aishwarya Rai is in director JP Dutta's remake of 1981 Umrao Jaan.
Abhishek Bachchan plays Aishwarya’s silent admirer and Shabana Azmi dons role that her mother essayed in the original.
The sepia tinted trend carries on as director Rituparno Ghosh tries his hand at remaking Guru Dutt's 1962 classic Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam. But it's difficult to imagine Salman Khan as Bhootnath or Priyanka Chopra as Choti Bahu.
The Khan(daan) of Salman, Sohail and Arbaaz are set to star in the remake of Manmohan Desai's pot pouri Amar Akbar Anthony.
There is also talk of the trio attempting a remake of Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi.
Meanwhile, grapevine is rife that Sanjay Dutt will try and step into the Big B's oversized shoes in the Satte Pe Satta remake.
So, is history repeating itself with not many new stories to tell or is it a nation yearning for yesterday once more.
