Tikait, a rallying point for Maya's foes

Lucknow: In Uttar Pradesh, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Mahendra Singh Tikait may have been arrested and released on bail but the politics around him is already snowballing into a huge controversy.

UP Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati is now facing the ire of all politicians in the state on the issue.

The arrest of Tikait for allegedly making casteist comments against Mayawati is resulting in political realignment in the state.

While Tikait may not be as powerful a Jat leader as he was a decade back, his arrest seems to have become the rallying point for all parties in the state.

The Congress, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) are supporting Tikait while Mayawati has hit back at her rivals.

Mayawati trained her guns on the Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal and has said that as a minister, he should not have supported Tikait.

"It is very sad that the Minister of State for Home Affairs has supported Mahinder Singh Tikait. As a Minister, rather than upholding the law he has gone in support of Tikait. He should resign," she said.

For the last 48 hours, everyone has had a dig at Mayawati. United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi has already exhorted her party workers to go to jail against the 'jungle raj' in UP.

Member of Parliament Jaya Bachchan has also accused Mayawati of using Amitabh Bachchan's name to get cheap publicity.

SP leaders Amar Singh Mulayam Singh have charged her of cheating people.

On Wednesday, the High Court served a notice to Mayawati for amassing disproportionate wealth but she chose to deny it.

"There is no notice that’s been served on me in the disproportionate wealth case by the Delhi High Court. It is a lie," Mayawati said.

"The department had come to the High Court filing second appeal saying these orders are not correct orders," lawyer Satish Mishra said.

Mayawati may have got a landslide victory in UP but throughout her political life; she has always had the support of one major political party.

Now she wants to go all the way all by herself. In the process she is finding herself being the target No. 1 for everyone.
