New Delhi: Golf in India is on an upswing. With an increasing corporate interest and the rising glamour quotient, even the amateur Indian circuit is developing at a rapid pace.

Actor Riya Sen, who recently launched the seventh edition of the Signature Club Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club, says, "I think every sport needs some sort of a glamour quotient. So I guess this is my contribution."

"My sister and I tried to learn how to play golf but we flopped," she added.

Considering amateur golf is the stepping-stone to become a professional golf player, interest amongst the non-golfers has started reflecting through India’s increasing talent pool.

The sport sees a 10 to 15 per cent increase in the number of amateurs every year in India.

Golfer Saurabh Bahugana says, "It's a fact that 4,500 golfers play across the country — in 31 golf clubs and 22 cities. The length and the breadth of the coverage, enables us to reach premium consumers."

"Amateur tournaments in the last 4-5 years have given us good professionals like Shiv Kapoor. He was a very good amateur player and now he's one of the top professionals in the country. Once your confidence in the amateur circuit increases — because you're playing so much — it's a very good time for you to turn pro and perform over there," says business head, United Spirits Limited, Debashish Shyam.

Chances of earning a living out of golf were never so bright for the Indian amateur golfers, and with more tournaments like the Club Golf Championship in the future, things can only get better for the Indian golfers.
