Timeline: The rescue operation to find YSR

The fate of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajashekar Reddy remains uncertain after his chopper went missing on Wednesday morning. A massive search operation is underway in the Nallamala forest to look for the CM and the four other co-passengers.

It has been close to twelve hours and there is still no news of the whereabouts of the Bell chopper that took off from Hyderabad.

Here's how the day unfolded:

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YSR Reddy goes missing on Wednesday morning.
  • His helicopter goes off the radar near Kurnool in the Rayalseema region at 0912 hours IST.
  • Reddy was on his way from Hyderabad to Chitoor for a political function.
  • In the first few hours there were conflicting signals about whether contact had been made with the chopper. It was only much later that the Andhra government confirmed there had been no contact with the CM and the helicopter has not been sighted.
  • Hyderabad Air Traffic Control says it couldn't access emergency distress signal from helicopter.
  • ISRO is helping the Andhra government in its search for the chopper with a special aircraft that will survey the area at night.
  • The US Defence Dept is also helping with satellite imagery that will be real time.
  • The Nallamala Forest, a Naxal-infested area, is the focus of the search operation. The Chief Minister's helicopter is understood to be in that area.
