Tirumala in festive spirit but cops on guard

Tirumala: Lakhs of devotees visit Tirupati every year for the Brahmotsavam festivities but following the recent bomb blasts in Hyderabad the authorities in the temple town are not taking any chances.

With the Brahmotsavam festivities on in full swing, authorities have deployed at least 2,000 extra police personnel, put up new checkpoints and even enforced strict checking of vehicles.

“We have taken all possible security measures and will ensure that nothing untoward happens, though people may find it inconvenient,” says security officer, Ramachari.

Lakhs of devotees gather in Tirumala for the nine-day annual festival, which features daily processions of the idol of Lord Venkateshwara.

Many say the security slows things down, but they welcome the sense of safety it brings. “It is good that there is so much security in the area,” says a devotee.

This year there will also be another Brahmotsavam held next month during the Navrathri celebrations.

With lakhs visiting Tirumala during this time of the year and many complaining that the security arrangements are a bit too tight, the authorities feel that it’s better to be safe than sorry.
