New Delhi: After stonewalling against Pranab Mukherjee's candidature for the President's post, the Trinamool Congress is now opposing the UPA's possible choice Hamid Ansari for Vice President's post. The Trinamool Congress sources say that the party is not keen on a second term for Hamid Ansari who is also the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
The way the Lokpal issue was handled in the Upper House is a factor in TMC's stand, say sources. The party instead wants former West Bengal gover Gopal Gandhi or Krishna Bose to be made Vice President.
On the Presidential poll, sources say the Trinamool is not keen on Pranab or PA Sangma's candidature and is likely to abstain from voting.
Sources had said that the Congress was keen on a second term for Hamid Ansari as the Vice President. Sources said that the Congress had discussed Ansari's name with the Left Front, SP, BSP, JD(S) and JD(U) and got their assurances. The party is confident of having the numbers in favour of Ansari.
Sources had said the Congress is yet to speak to West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, but since the UPA already has the numbers to back Ansari, the party is not too worried about Mamata's reaction.
