Chennai: Tipsy drivers beware! Your days of joyriding may soon be over for good!

A group of engineering students at a Chennai university has come up with a novel gadget to curb drunken driving. And it could possibly be the perfect cure for drunken driving.

The device, created by the electronics students of Chennai's MGR University, ensures no drunken drivers can even hit the road. All it takes is a whiff of alcohol in your breath, and sensors in the alcohol-detector swing into action. If the level of inebriation is over the safe limit, the car will simply refuse to start!

"Even if the driver wants to start the car without getting caught by the alcohol-detector, he can't unless he blows into the sensor. So a drunk driver simply can't start the car," Sesha Arun Kumar, one of students of the group, explains.

If you think you can fool this device by starting the car and then drinking, perish the thought! This machine is way too smart for that. If alcohol levels are found to be even a little bit above safe levels while the car is running, it is total shutdown!

But the technology is still far from perfect. The device is still too big in size. Also blowing on it every time you want to start the car can be quite a hassle.

But the device still got an enthusiastic response when it was shown to the traffic cops. Its creators now want to perfect it for commercial use.

"We are planning to convert this kit into a more compact model, which will fit on the steering wheel. And then we will talk to car companies and commercialise it," G Sujayan, another student of the group, says.

The device can be fitted on to just about any kind of vehicles, even motorbikes and autorickshaws.
