Alanganallur (Tamil Nadu): The Supreme Court has finally been tamed. The Jallikattu, or the traditional bullfight, will take place as usual this Pongal in Madurai district.
But the Supreme Court order comes with a rider – no cruelty to the bulls and minimum injury to the maladors. The apex court has indicated that any deviation from the rule will mean a ban on the bullfight next year.
As news broke out on Tuesday morning that the ban had been lifted, Tamil Nadu celebrated Pongal festival with a renewed vigour. Jubilation, celebration, fireworks and the bull, of course, was brought out in all its glory and splendour.
Among the many reasons to rejoice were that tradition will now remain intact and fears have been allayed.
“We will not experience the wrath of the Gods now. The deity will protect us. He will give us a bountiful crop and good health,” a resident of Alanganallur, Krishna Veni said.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, too, seems to have won some brownie points.
“The Jallikattu is part of our Tamil identity. It's a game of valour and youth. We are indebted to Kalaignar for safe guarding our culture and protecting our rights,” another resident of Alanganallur, Thou Mani said.
