TN cops suspect priest's son in hit-run case

Kanyakumari: Police claim they are close to arresting a priest’s son who allegedly tried to crush two government officials demolishing an unauthorised temple in Kanyakumari on February 6.

Senthil Kumar, a 25-year-old engineering graduate, allegedly ran his Ambassador car over Anthony Xavier and C Somasundaram and kill them. The “murder attempt” was caught on camera.

''We have got some specific leads (and) based on that we are sure we will get Senthil Kumar very fast. We are coordinating with the force from other areas for this,” says Santosh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Nagercoil.

Xavier though alleges that the police have been slow in probing the attack. ''No police officer came here to find out the facts. A few days ago a constable came to find out about the cameraman who shot the video. The constable asked questions to my friends and coworkers but there was no action beyond that,” says Xavier.

Sources say the police are under pressure from a lawyers' group not to arrest the accused Russel Raj, the alleged chief conspirator, and Senthil, son of the chief priest of the temple where the demolition work was on.
