Chennai: It's election time, so promises made by political parties aren't unusual.
However, Tamil Nadu's political analysts hope that the parties don't actually deliver on their extravagant promises - which will spell trouble for taxpayers.
The DMK promiosed colour TVs, so Amma has now promised free computers. Karunanidhi said rice for Rs two, so AIADMK promised 10 kilos free - that's more or less Tamil Nadu politics in the last one month
These elections have been fought on the politics of promise. The two Dravidian parties have promised the voter virtually everything.
But political parties always make promises during elections, so what has been the Dravidian track record when it come's to keeping these promises"
In 2001 Jayalalithaa came to power with absolute majority, but these are the promises that was in her party's manifesto that have remained just those - promises.
- Free Gas stove for family Below Poverty Line
- Panchami Land for the Dalits
- Reservations for Muslims
- Employment for everyone
- Rs 5000 for families with two girl children which go in for family planning
In 1996 when the DMK won a landslide and came to power these were some of the promises they din't bother about
- Protection for the Handloom sector
- Panchami Land for the Dalits
- Free Power for Power Loom sector
- Implementation of Minimum wages for Agricultural labourers
- Settlement of the Cauvery and Mullaiperiyar disputes
But this election it's been a bonanza of promises. Analysts fear even if some of the promises made are actually implemented, it would be too huge a burden on tax payers.
Says Editor, Industrial Economist, S Viswanathan, "I am worried that we are on a suicidal path. We're sacrificing development for temporary electoral gains. Power is everything, to be attained at any cost. Who's worried about long term interests?"
Clearly whichever party come's to power in Tamil Nadu, it's the tax payers money that will get hit.
