TN minister seeking favour for kin quits

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Minister for Social Welfare Poongothai Aladi Aruna resigned on Wednesday after a taped conversation released to the media showed her asking a top vigilance department official to "go easy" on a corruption case against her cousin.

The tape was released to the media on Monday by Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy .

The minister's cousin Jawahar, who is an assistant engineer in Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, was caught accepting a bribe and suspended. In the excerpts of that conversation between Poongothai and the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) SK Upadhyaya, she was heard directing the officer to "go easy" on her cousin.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has accepted her resignation, declaring in the state Assembly that the incident was shameful

"It's shameful and she has submitted her resignation," Karunanidhi said in Assembly while disclosing that Poongothai had submitted her resignation to him

"In this incident, there has been an effort to save a person charged with bribery allegations since he was her relative.I feel ashamed for the fact that a minister has been involved in the issue," the Chief Minister said.
