TN murder attempt: Highway Dept on fast

New Delhi: Angry with the police and government inaction, thousands of Highway Department employees are on a day's token fast in Chennai.

Twenty days have passed since a shocking attempt to murder two Highway engineers in Kanyakaumari was caught on tape, but nothing has been done yet.

The main suspect, Senthil Kumar, is still at large and Highway authority employees are upset as the police is not taking the incident seriously enough.

Senthil is related to the priest of the temple which was being demolished under court orders for encroachment on the highway. He had abandoned the car and escaped after the attack.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Highways Engineers Association, E Venkatachalam said, “In future, sufficient protection should be given law enforcing personnel like the engineers during demolition work."

Engineer Anthony Xavier, who was grievously injured in the incident, now hopes that the video will ensure that the guilty are punished and better protection is provided to officers.

"A man named Arjunan repeatedly threatened me and kept saying I would have to pay with my life for demolishing the temple," Xavier said.

Meanwhile, the government has said that it has instructed police officials to be more vigilant and careful when such encroachment evictions are carried out.
