Chennai: A movie on one of the biggest revolutionary leaders of Tamil Nadu, EV Ramaswamy Naicker or more popularly known as Periyar, will hit the theatres after crossing many hurdles on Tuesday.
The movie, directed by Gnanarajasekar, captures the political and personal life of Periyar who is known as the father of the Dravidian movement.
“I have always wanted to do the role of a historical character and such roles always become immortal. But as far as I'm concerned I follow Periyar's ideologies, I don't believe in God and even in other issues such as women's liberation, I'm his follower,” actor Sathyaraj said.
But the movie about the Dravidian icon, who preached rationalism, had to endure irrational objections from today's political parties.
The PMK started it all when they objected to actress Khushboo playing the role of Periyar's wife Maniyammai, a hangover from the PMK's agitation against her regarding her comments on pre-marital sex.
“I never had any hiccups doing the project because when the project was offered to me I grabbed it with both hands. If any political parties had any hiccups with me doing this movie it was their problem not mine,” Khushboo said.
But despite all the troubles, the movie funded by the Tamil Nadu government has finally released, perhaps an effort to immortalise a man whose followers are today's decision makers.
