Chennai: Tamil Nadu is tense over the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils. On Saturday, the Tamil Nadu government ordered an indefinite closure of educational institutions in light of the students' unrest over the Sri Lankan Tamil issue.

All colleges and hostels will remain closed until further notice, due to the unrest over war in Sri Lanka.

The government's action came two days before students were to go on a strike demanding a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

The strike was to start on Monday but students of some colleges have already gone on strike demanding cessation of hostilities between Sri Lankan troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

A group of students were arrested on Friday when they tried to attack Sri Lanka's Deputy High Commissioner's office in Chennai.

Meanwhile, thousands of Tamils also took to the streets in London on Saturday to protest against military action in Sri Lanka.

According to the British media around 50,000 people attended the rally and walked with placards shouting slogans and demanding an immediate ceasefire.

They were also demanding that the Sri Lankan government must negotiate with the LTTE.

While the event passed off peacefully, one arrest was reported. According to the Red Cross, nearly 2,50,000 civilians are trapped in a 115-square-mile area where the LTTE has been trapped in by the advancing Sri Lankan troops in the northern part of country.
