To check terror UP puts rider on buying bicycles

New Delhi: Buying a bicycle in Uttar Pradesh is not going to be a simple exercise soon. The Uttar Pradesh Government has issued a stringent order asking bicycle retailers not to sell cycles to people without identity proof.

The documents required to get a cellphone SIM card will be needed for buying bicycle, the order says. The Mayawati government drafted the order within days of the Jaipur blasts in which explosives packed on bicycles were used.

Bicycles loaded with explosives were used in the bomb blasts in Varanasi, Faizabad and Lucknow last year. Indian Mujahideen, the group which has claimed responsibility for the Jaipur blasts, sent media organizations an e-mail which mentioned the number etched on the frame of a cycle used in the blast.

Three video clips sent by the group show a cycle carrying the bomb before the explosions and the other two videos showed another cycle carrying a bag containing the explosives.

The UP Government’s decision seems to aims at keeping track on people buying bicycles but its feasibility is being doubted upon. How is the government going to check on people buying second-hand bicycles? Millions of people use bicycles in the state—how is the government going to check on them? Those are some of the questions being asked.

Terrorists find bicycles convenient for bomb attacks because they are used by millions of people and unattended bicycles do not attract attention.
