Chennai: Nine years ago on February 14, 1998 hundreds had gathered in Coimbatore to listen to BJP leader L K Advani speak ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
As fate would have it, his flight from Thiruvananthapuram was delayed by three hours. In that span of time bombs went off at 12 different places in the city, including the rally site, killing 58 people.
Terror had struck Coimbatore for the second time – over 200 people were injured in 40 minutes.
Investigations blamed the al-Umma, a suspected Muslim terror outfit, and the Jihad committee for carrying out these attacks.
By 2002, 166 people were facing trial including founder of the al-Umma S A Basha and leader of Kerala's People's Democratic Party Abdul Nasser Madhani.
Nine years after the blasts, it is finally judgement day on Wednesday.
Security across Coimbatore has been tightened and after S A Basha was awarded a life sentence and Mohammad Ansari was given two life sentences to run concurrently.
