Too busy to own a dog? Now you can rent one

London: When you live in a big city and have a hectic lifestyle, owning a dog is pretty much impossible. An American firm now has a solution to this – offering dog rentals.

The company, Flexpetz, offers part-time pets to dog-lovers who find it impossible to become full-time owners. The firm has now brought its rent-a-dog concept to London.

One of the company’s customers, Patrick, grew up with dogs. His job in the recording industry, however, made it tough for him to own one.

“I don't have the time to give it the proper care that it needs, so this (this option of renting) is the best of both worlds,” he says.

For Pippa, another Londoner who has rented a Pomeranian called Gucci, it works out to about $200 a month.

Each dog can be hired for a maximum of 20 days a month.

Flexpetz says the concept has taken off in New York and Los Angeles.

To some, dogs have become fashion accessories but the company insists that's not what it's about. Flexpetz says its mission is to prevent people from getting a dog, then abandoning it when they realise the work involved.

Not everybody is happy with the idea, however, of what some refer to as a canine time-share.

British animal welfare organisation, the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has questioned whether it is cruel.

Modern lifestyles have made renting everything from cars to designer handbags popular. For many, though, hiring a dog is simply going too far.
