Too early to talk about PM candidate: Singh

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has returned to New Delhi from his 10-day trip to the US and France. Singh talked to media in a press conference after reaching the capital.

In the wake of the Wall Street crisis, he assured the Indian financial community with positive results.

“Top priority to be given to insulate India from global financial crisis,” said the PM.

Talking about the Singur crisis, he said that he is hopeful for a quick solution to the problem.

“Terrorism and Left-wing extremism are issues that need to be tackled,” Singh said.

When asked about the Congress’ candidate for the post of prime minister in the coming General Elections, the PM said that it is “too early” to say anything.

"It's too early to talk about the potential prime ministerial candidate for the Congress as there are several leaders who are equally qualified or better qualified than me.”

Singh’s remarks come days after senior party leader M Veerappa Moily had said Rahul Gandhi 100 per cent fills the bill for the PM's post.

Talking about Indo-Pak relations, the PM said that he is confident of normalisation of relations with Pakistan.

But, when asked about changing the Home Minister after the recent bomb blasts, Singh refused to comment anything.

He said that changing Home Minister Shivraj Patil in the wake of rising terror attacks in the country is not something he is going to discuss in the press conference.

Singh also said that the Congress is accused of not managing coalition but he wanted to change the perception.

On his trip to France Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had taken up the issue of ban on Sikh students wearing turbans in schools.

Referring to it, Singh said, “Sikh children in France are suffering if they cannot wear turbans at schools.”
