New Delhi: Punjab Police Director Generals or their wives are amongst candidates for the 117 assembly seats in Punjab that goes to the polls on January 30. It's a no holds barred contest for these contestants as they try to use police clout past and present to win the electoral battle.

Wives of two top cops are fighting it out in Muslim-dominated Malerkotla. The Shiromani Akali Dal's candidate, first-timer Farzana Alam is wife of retired Punjab DGP Mohammed Izhar Alam. Her opponent is Congress' two-time MLA Razia Sultana, wife of Additional DGP Mohammed Mustafa. Farzana has accused Mustafa of misusing police machinery to get votes for wife Sultana.

Razia Sultana says voters should be wise enough to choose between a serving police officer and a retired one. Farzana is banking on the work her husband did for the constituency in his capacity as the head of Punjab Wakf Board.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Election Commission has taken note of complaints that Mustafa is campaigning for his wife. It has asked the government to cancel his leave.

In Moga, retired director general of Punjab police PS Gill is taking on the Congress on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket. After allegations that he was misusing official machinery, an election observer records his every move on camera.

For Punjab, a state where the police forces acquired unusual importance post terrorism, the police here wields significant clout. The question is if that would be enough to get the voters to vote.
