Srinagar: After three days of intense gunfight between the army and militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Khrew forests area, a top LeT terrorist who is an IED expert has been killed and four army jawans have been injured.

Meanwhile, the army and police have been combing the Khrew woods even as the 10 suspected terrorists of Lashkar-e-Toiba remain elusive.

The army which pressed choppers to have a better view of the forests, have been able to destroy a well-stocked hideout.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Farooq Ahmad said, “It is not that that we are dealing with qualitative militancy but it is we who are waiting. We are patient and avoiding collateral damage and we are here for a long haul.''

The police admit that some fresh batches of battle-hardened terrorists, 200-250 in number have fanned out in both south and north Kashmir since the last few months and there have been more than 50 encounters so far.

“There are concerted efforts by militants to cross to this side although army has foiled some bids, many have managed to reach the hinterland, added Ahmad.

In what seems to be like a new tactic, the militants are now increasingly engaging the forces in bushes, marches, swamps and forests and avoiding civilian houses where they would otherwise be surrounded and eliminated easily.

Meanwhile, what is causing more concern to the security forces after the spurt in the infiltration, are the long and grueling encounters and for them to stop, the terror tap across should be completely turned off.
