Builder gets bail, Customs clueless

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: A top builder and contractor from Pune, Avinash Bhosale, who was detained for evading Customs at the Mumbai airport on Sunday, was released on bail on Monday.

Bhosale was returning from London with his family when officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) searched the builder's luggage at the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport, and found expensive watches, jewellery and other items for which he had not paid Customs duty.

Sources say, among the items he was carrying were five watches, some of them diamond-studded and said to be worth not less than Rs 10 lakh each.

The DRI officers, who had been keeping a close watch on Bhosale following a tip-off from London, interrogated him and later handed him over to Mumbai Police for an overnight remand at a lock-up.

However, without the knowledge of the DRI, the police put Bhosale up for bail before the night magistrate, who set him free for Rs 50,000 and asked him to pay Rs 15 lakh as fine.

The DRI sleuths were informed of Bhosale’s release only when they went to the police station on Monday morning to take him to court.

Bhosale is known to have close links with leaders from several political parties including the NCP, Congress, Shiv Sena and BJP. He also owns a five star hotel Sun-n-Sand in Pune.
