London: Britain is facing its highest job crisis in 11 years as unemployment rate rises to 5.8 per cent, according to figures released on Wednesday.

While four British firms axed more than 5,000 jobs this week, the government slashed the number of jobs available for non-EU workers by 2,00,000.

In addition to that, the country’s new list of shortage skills specifies that to qualify under Tier-2, non-EU aspirants must also possess satisfactory English language skills, earn more than £24,000 and have adequate funds to support themselves initially.

According to the new list, hospital consultants, vets, specialist nurses, scientists, engineers, social workers, care assistants, quantity surveyors, ship and hovercraft officers, pipe fitters and line repairers, dancers and choreographers, chefs, etc continue to be in high demand.

IT workers, however, have been removed from the list. But Indian IT firms like TCS and Satyam,, who rely on hiring techies from India, seem unperturbed.

“We could not staff our needs purely from UK people. We are supporting the government in its initiatives as it’s in our interest to have big and talented local pool,” marketing director, TCS UK, Keith Sharp says.

Meanwhile, the British government hopes that the new measures will curb influx of foreign migrants and safeguard local jobs.
