Tough winters, dense fog delay flights

New Delhi: The Kanoria family was all set to fly to Dehradun for a family holiday, but the dense fog in the capital ruined it. On early Monday morning, the visibility fell to 100 metres making it impossible for flights to take off.

"Lot of time has been wasted, there was no information. We wanted to go for a 3 day holiday and one day is gone," says HP Kanoria, a passenger.

Thick fog played havoc with flight schedules with nearly 50 flights delayed and 5 cancelled. Commuters were asked to board the flight to avoid chaos outside the airport but even that was not of much help.

"I however de-boarded the flight because even if it comes on the runway it will not take off," says another passenger Rohini Mehra.

Arrivals into Delhi witnessed the same fate. The Kortrights, who were to land in Delhi from Kolkata in one and a half hours, ended up spending five hours on board.

“We spent five hours in the plane, without food and we had to pay for everthing,” says passenger Peter Kortright.

Although the Delhi airport now boasts of a CAT 3 B compliant runway, not all pilots are CAT 3B trained and in such a scenario, delays in arrivals and departure are inevitable.

"Now we could use air crafts with IR capability , this seems to be an option," says Capt Jack Ekl

With airlines still slipping on the passenger information systems and airports not equipped to handle the chaos, travellers may just have a difficult winter ahead.
