New Delhi: A Ministry of Environment and Forests report has given a clean chit to a US ship - Platinum II - anchored at Alang port for scrapping.
Although environmentalists allege the ship contains 200 tonnes of toxic asbestos, the Environment Ministry report says no toxic material has been found on board.
CNN-IBN has exclusive access to the Site Inspection Report which says there is no hazardous waste which is on board the ship.
However, environmentalists are now crying foul saying that the inspection was not done properly and the committee did not take any laboratory samples.
Environmentalists say the committee should have taken more time over the report and then they should have submitted whether the ship contains toxic waste or not.
Sources in the ministry have informed CNN-IBN that Minister of State Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh, is yet to take action on this report.
The report is only being tabled and being made public on Saturday evening, but the action/decision is yet to be taken on whether the ship will be allowed to be dismantled in India or not.
