Thiruvananthapuram: Speaker G Karthikeyan visited the labour camp, set up at the construction site of the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER), Vithura, on Saturday after getting a report on lack of proper facilities for the construction workers. He told the IISER officials, who accompanied him to the camp, that it was their duty to ensure that the labourers were being provided with basic facilities. He said that it was in the larger interest that Vitura was chosen to be the location for the IISER, which would become an internationally-reputed institution in future.
“But the condition of the workers, who are engaged in the construction of the IISER campus, is not at all encouraging. The duty of the IISER officials does not end just by outsourcing the work to a contractor. They must also ensure that the workers are being provided with adequate facilities and they are living in a hygienic place,” he said. He directed that new workers should be recruited only after ensuring the setup of more kitchens and toilets at the site.
The Speaker also said that a top-level meeting of the IISER representatives would be called immediately to discuss the problems of the labourers.
