New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) resumed its sealing operations after a two-day gap on Monday.
The traders in the Capital are expected to continue agitating against the drive. They will be taking out a silent protest march from Delhi’s Raja Garden area to the residence of Urban Development Minister Ajay Maken and will also hold several sit-ins to mark their protest.
The MCD has so far sealed 353 properties for misuse of residential premises in South Delhi, after the drive was resumed on November 8.
The agitation ran out of steam following the arrest of trade leaders including General Secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders Praveen Khandelwal and in the face of heavy deployment of police personnel.
The core committee of the Confederation of All India Traders is expected to meet on Monday to chalk out the future course of action.
Meanwhile, the Centre has moved the Supreme Court seeking relief for traders from the sealing drive.
The application filed by the Urban Development Ministry before the apex court registry also sought notifications of the apex court orders of September 29 and November 6.
In its application, the ministry had asked the apex court to spare about 25,000 traders who have given affidavits to stop the misuse of residential premises for commercial activities and covered by the September 7 and 15 notifications which allows trading activities in over 2,000 roads from the drive.
Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy on Sunday had said the Government was contemplating several options to solve the sealing issue in the Capital.
"There are several options the Government is mulling to solve the sealing problem. We may once again move the Supreme Court on the issue," Reddy had said.
"In the meantime, the sealing will go on," he added.
The 24-hour anti-sealing bandh called by traders on Friday had failed to evoke a strong response with several markets, including Connaught Place, Janpath, Khan Market, Sarojini Nagar, Chandni Chowk and Daryaganj, remaining open.
In a show of support to traders, the Delhi Unit of Shiv Sena on Sunday took out a two-wheeler rally covering major markets in the Capital.
Meanwhile, traders at Sadar Bazar Barri Market threatened to commit mass suicide outside Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's residence to protest reported attempts to shift the market to the Delhi border.
