New Delhi: Within days of the grave hooch tragedy in the state, CNN-IBN investigation in Gujarat has shown that prohibition laws are being openly flouted.
It is claimed that there is a crackdown after the death of 130 people in a Hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad. But the menace extends well beyond the city.
CNN-IBN has pictures from Junagadh, just 300 km away where an illegal liquor unit is run out of a room. Shockingly, the country-made liquor is packed in bottles with foreign liquor labels.
The bottles are sealed and sold under the guise of foreign liquor. Bottles marked propylene glycol are also lying around in the unit. Simply put, it is a deadly cocktail of chemicals in grease and paint.
But its not just Ahmedabad that's poisoned by hooch. The lethal brew has also infiltrated the state through the border it shares with the Union territory of Daman and Diu. Through the borders of Gujarat, the illicit liquor is spreading through the country's veins to other states as well.
The local law enforcement agencies seem to be helpless in the matter. A video taken two months ago shows police men filling a police jeep with hooch bottles. The killer brew also finds it's way on boats, on trucks, on loaded motorbikes, or even government buses, according to the locals. How is hooch making it past check posts, ask many.
Illicit liquor joints in Vadodara showed how they make the drink.
The recipe for the disastrous brew is an amalgamation of water, jaggery and alum. This mix is then stored in a pot in the ground and allowed to ferment for 3-4 days.
The fermented liquid drink is then heated in a kiln and bottled.
If the cocktail is hard to digest, there's more. Children are being employed to make hooch.
A child who works in manufacture and delivery of the shameful product said, "I study in school but due to circumstances I have to work here. We make country liquor."
Hasmukh, a local bootlegger said, "I make country-liquor, One bottle costs 10 rupees. we manufacture 20-25 crates in a day."
Despite national uproar over the deaths in hooch tragedy in Gujarat, it is yet to change the clandestine hooch making business in the dry state.
