Borka, Kamrup District (Assam): Death, cremation, resurrection and again death. In the latest twist to the tragic saga of FCI Director P C Ram who was kidnapped by the ULFA, his son has identified the body this evening.
DR P C Ram was killed in an encounter on Wednesday evening, and was with two ULFA militants.
"The body matches with the description of Dr P C Ram," said DIG, Central Western Range, Assam Police, G P Singh.
The death puts a question mark on the information network of the police that clearly miscalculated the extent of resistance.
Also, the police seem to be running around in circles. Two weeks ago, a body with multiple stab wounds was dug out from Baksa, around 110 kms west of Guwahati.
The body was cremated in Delhi, after Dr Ram's son, Pravin, 'identified' his father. But five days later, Pravin said his father had called up to say he was still in ULFA's hands.
Sources now say that the body that was cremated was that of an Army informer, Lance Naik Sunil Kumar. The police will again send body samples to ascertain the man's identity.
Says G P Singh, "The DNA test is going to be continued. Perhaps we will send this body for a DNA test too. We have informed the Lance Naik's family members."
With this encounter, many questions have been thrown open, but the most important question that needs to be answered is about the sincerity with which the state government and the Centre were proceeding in the P C Ram abduction case.
