New Delhi: No more telemarketing calls or text messages, if you don't want it. India's telecom regulator has issued guidelines to mobile operators to STOP all unwanted calls and messages.

"Obviously it is irritation for all of us at 90 per cent of the time - 10 per cent of the time it is agreed utility. So, we should filter it and make it like 90 per cent utility and 10 per cent irritation," said Prashant Singhal, Telecom Leader, Ernst & Young.

To save yourself from all unwanted communication, all you need to do is to register your number with the 'National Customer Preference Registry'.

Telecom companies will have to pay a fine of upto Rs 2.5 lakh for disturbing people registred under the 'Do Not Disturb' category.

To register, you can either dial the toll free number 1909 or log onto www.nccptrai.gov.in and click on 'How to register?' under the tab that says 'Information for customers'.

But in case you don't want to block all the information you can opt for partial blocking.

"You may go for partial blocking if you want information on certain sectors like healthcare, banking," said Prashant Singhal.

In case if you continue to receive telemarketing calls and messages a week after you've registered, you can complain to your phone company.

You'll need to give the phone number from which the call came, the date, time and brief description of the service being peddled. You can also put your grievances online on www.nccptrai.gov.in by clicking on the 'How to register complaint'.

The new regulation will also affect a few critical services however. Patients looking for blood donors can only send up to a 100 SMSes a day. But for most others, the regulation comes as big relief.
