Mumbai: A hospital experience is usually stressful, especially if you are a patient's relative.
But in Mumbai's Bhagwati hospital, housewives of the locality are playing good samaritans to help anxious relatives.
"There is no time to go home and sometimes there is no money so this takes care of my food,” said a patient's relative, Suvidya.
Believe it or not, lunch is actually free at Borivali's Bhagwati Hospital and many like Suvidya queue up to eat it.
A free meal a day is an initiative was started by two Borivali housewives, Bhavana Sanghvi and Surbhi Majmudar.
"Relatives who come from far off have no facility for food. One can't always eat at hotels. So we started this,” said Bhavana Sanghvi.
For the past six years, Bhavana and Surbhi, have been visiting the hospital regularly.
They provide wholesome meals to patients' relatives, incurring a cost of Rs. 750 daily.
"We have many donors who anonymously contribute to this noble cause,” said Surbhi Majmudar.
Walking through the dismal corridors of the hospital, they try to spread cheer among the anxious relatives.
They not only distribute free food coupons but also counsel the patients. The hospital authorities also extend their support to these women.
"If we treat the patients, they treat the relatives. And when both the sectors combine, it helps in speedy recovery of my patient,” said Medical superintendent, Bhagwati Hospital, Dr Wadiwalla.
By providing food and the warmth of their company, these women bring some relief to the ailing patients and their families.
