Lakme Fashion Week: Back to basics for men

We asked ace menswear designers Arjun Khanna and Raghavendra Rathore to recommend must-haves for the coming season. "Move away from the metrosexual attitude. This time it's all about you, the man, the stylish man!" says Raghavendra. "So, don't think these clothes are making a comeback. Think of it as the time when you need to stand up and take notice of what you need to wear."

THE JACKET

Get them in as many types as possible. Vintage checks, vanilla shades (a la Arjun Khanna), dark silks, or the stripes, all should have a place in your wardrobe. These go perfectly with a crisp white or dark shirt and trousers. You can wear them for a evening out with your friends, or even while visiting relatives and family.

THE WAISTCOAT

No, don't think this is a Victorian trend that is out. Bring out your dad's vintage waist-coat because it is so in this season. Check out Arjun Khanna's pastel shades or Raghavendra's sleek silk styles, you would wear em all. Whether over a long-sleeved shirt (for formal occasions) or with a short-sleeved shirt (for that power lunch), the waist-coat goes well with anything, and will make you look like a superstar. Remember Amitabh's look in Deewar?

THE JEANS

No, we're not talking about the raasta-sasta maal, here. According to Raghavendra, move away from the jeans worth Rs 3,000. Buy yourself a pair of jeans worth Rs 8,000. "Believe me, the difference will show," he says. The super expensive denim jeans is a must-have in your closet. Pair it up with the ever-green white shirt and you're good to go.

THE SAFARI SUIT

And you thought only your dad could wear something like this. Check out how cool you can look in a safari suit! Move away from boring dull colours and done-to-death fabrics. Choose slick colours like greys and navy blues, and fabrics like crisp cottons and silks.

THE KURTA

This is rural culture made hot. Looks like trends from the recent Bollywood film, Welcome to Sajjanpur have had a huge impact in our fashion circles! Don't just get yourself a plain kurta. Funk it up with shoulder bands and double-breasted pockets with big buttons that make a bold statement.

ACCESORISE 'EM!

You are used to wearing the regular watch, belt, and cuff links, but this time, why not try something different and make a statement?

According to Raghavendra, a stylised business card (and holder) is perfect to make that first impression. Invest in a nice wrist watch to bring out your personality.Keep the belts more formal, which means thin, this time. Thick belts have that informal touch.

Your phone need not be the most expensive around, but it is interesting how a phone can tell a lot about you. Make sure yours is clean and shiny. It should look good in your hands.
