Trichy: Padmini, a fifth standard student is the only student in the Government Adidravidar Welfare Elementary School in one of the busiest areas in Trichy. And to coach her, is just one teacher.

"I came to this school because of my passion for teaching. If the class strength increases, just see how I'll make this school an excellent institution," the teacher, Karrupaiye said.

The school started in 1947 taught nearly 300 students for many years. But now, parents in the area, who themselves were students here once, refuse to admit their children in the school. Their fear is that the building could crumble any day.

"The building is really damaged. We can never say when it'll fall," a parent, Ravi said.

The building is falling apart and it leaks when it rains. Of the two blackboards, one is now a door.

The roof is broken at several places and in these conditions, Padmini gets her education.

"Let's not be fools now and break the school down. This area needs a school and this used to be a good one. If government fixes it, we residents are ready to pitch in," a parent, Mariyadoss said.

However, until the reconstruction happens, Padmini is in a way lucky on one front. After all, she's the only topper in the school.
