New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress will abstain from voting on the women’s reservation bill in the Rajya Sabha. The party has two MPs in the house.

Sources tell CNN-IBN that the party believes the government is “bulldozing” the bill through the house and is angry that an all-party meeting was not called to discuss the legislation.

According to IANS Mamata Banerjee had urged Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday to convene all party meeting to evolve a consensus on the issue after both the houses of parliament witnessed unruly protests by parties opposing the bill.

Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandopadhya told CNN-IBN that his party wanted the government to “rework” the bill and take into account the concerns of the minority before introducing it in the Lok Sabha.

“We are not being taken into confidence. There are huge minority groups, particularly Muslims, who are very much of the view--their interest has to be considered. We are of the opinion that we will not oppose the women’s reservation bill but the system, the policy, the way it was forcefully imposed today,” he said.

Bandopadhya said he his party objected to the government taking support of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Left parties for the bill.

The Trinamool Congress has two MPs in the Rajya Sabha- Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy and Swapan Sadhan Bose. The party, which has 19 MPs in Lok Sabha is the second largest constituent in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
