Tinamool's Firoza Bibi wins Nandigram by-poll

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress candidate Firoza Bibi has won the Nandigram by-election for the West Bengal Assembly by 39,551 votes.

Bibi defeated her nearest rival CPI's Paramananda Bharati in a six-cornered contest.

Bibi, the mother of a victim of police firing in March, 2007, polled 93,022 votes, while Bharati cornered 53,473 votes, official sources said as the result for the by-election was announced.

She is also an activist of Trinamool Congress-led Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee that forced the state government to shelve its plan to acquire farmland for industrial purpose last year.

The by-election was held on January 5 and had been necessitated following the resignation of Communist Party of India MLA Muhammad Ilyas following a sting operation which exposed his involvement in a corruption case.

More than 80 per cent electorate exercised their franchise in the by-elections.
