Ghaziabad: Eleven people were killed and five others seriously injured in an accident in Ghaziabad early on Sunday morning.
The accident took place at 3:30 AM in Ghaziabad when two trucks, one coming from Hapur and the other from Alwar in Rajasthan collided.
Six people died on the spot, while five succumbed to injuries at a Ghaziabad hospital later. The rest are seriously injured. A total of 16 people were travelling in the trucks.
The incident only points to the complete absence of basic road safety mechanisms on our highways.
The highways show a marked absence of speed-breakers, inadequate lighting and non- functioning traffic signals, which have made the area more vulnerable to such accidents.
The blame game has begun even before investigations make a headway, with the Ghaziabad Development Authority and the police passing the buck.
“This is the responsibility of the traffic police and they are the ones who should ensure that such incidents do not happen,” insists Ghaziabad Mayor, Damiyanti Goyal
The police have chosen to put the blame on the weather.
“The accident took place because of poor visibility due to fog and lack of proper street lighting,” says DCP Deepak Ratan.
The truth appears to be a bit different, however.
“These signals have not been working at all. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't,” said police constable, Dharmender.
What is clear, though, is that if the GDA and traffic police do not take some concrete steps very soon, then incidents like these shall happen with greater frequency.
