Sangrur/Chandigarh: Caught in an ugly battle between the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and the Left Front is a truck driver, who has been accused of an assassination bid on the Railway Minister.

Gurjant Singh's truck had hit Mamata's convoy after she was returning from her rally at Lalgarh. Singh is in police custody. MLAs from Punjab, Singh's home state, on Thursday made an appeal to the West Bengal government and Mamata for justice.

"The CPM has setup suicide squads to eliminate me and other leaders of Trinamool before Assembly elections," Mamata had said after the accident.

Mamata had claimed that Singh could be the assassin hired to do the job after his truck hit a car in the Railway Minister's convoy in East Midnapore on August 9 as she was returning from her rally in Lalgarh. Singh is in police custody, charged with conspiracy to murder Mamata.

"He called to tell me that the brakes of his truck failed and it hit a VIP car but there wasn't much damage," says Singh's wife Gurbans Kaur.

The Left though has a political theory to this incident.

"The Union Railway Minister's prestige was at stake and she needed a face saving device to keep herself away from Parliament. That's why she built up this story," claims CPM leader Mohammad Salim.

Whatever maybe the story, it's the family of Singh in Punjab that waits for the return of its breadwinner. Veer Singh refuses to believe his brother is an assassin.

"My brother is innocent. We want the government to send him home as soon as possible," says Veer Singh.

Singh's case has struck a chord even with Punjab politicians and an MLA landed up in Kolkata to plead his case.

Singh's villagers demand that West Bengal Police should come to Sangrur to complete investigations and determine if he is guilty. They say unless the police has conclusive evidence of him trying to kill Mamata, he should be immediately let off.
