New Delhi: Most parts of India will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday, ending the month-long Ramzan, while some other parts are likely to celebrate the festival on Wednesday.

In Delhi, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, confirmed that Eid would be celebrated on Tuesday.

"The sighting of the moon has been confirmed. Id mubarak," he said.

In Bihar, the Eid moon was sighted on Monday and Sadar Mufti-cum-Naib Qazi of Edara-Sharia Mufti Mohammed Hasan Raza Noori announced that the festival will be celebrated across the state on Tuesday.

According to Kamal Farooqi, a Member of the All India Muslim Personnel Law Board, Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday also in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Orissa.

In Karnataka, the new moon was sighted on Monday in Mysore, Tumkur, Bangalore and Chennai and Eid would be celebrated on Tuesday, Khadir Ahmed, Convenor of Hilal (moon sighting) Committee, said.

Jammu and Kashmir will, however, celebrate Eid on Wednesday. Since the Eid moon was not sighted in any part of the state on Monday, Eid will be celebrated on Wednesday. Delhi's Shahi Imam Bukhari also said that Eid will be celebrated on October 25.

Pakistan, too, will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday, it was officially announced on Monday. A special committee appointed to determine the date for the festival at the end of the holy fasting month of Ramzan said the moon was not sighted on moon night and as a result, Eid will be celebrated on Wednesday. Pakistan has already declared a four-day holiday for the festival from Monday.

India's President A P J Abdul Kalam has greeted the nation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. "On the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, I extend my best wishes to all my people in India and abroad," he said in a message.

Kalam said the festival brings happiness to the people on the month of Holy Ramzan, a period of fasting, prayer and charity. "May this year's Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations strengthen mutual goodwill and inspire each one of us to follow the path of love and compassion," he said.
