Tuesday’s could be a dull day for malls

Gurgaon: The state government has asked for all shops to be shut every Tuesday. This they say is to ensure that labour laws are implemented.

However, the question that is troubling shop owners is whether the malls will also be shut on Tuesdays. The Haryana government says that this is the only way employees will get an off day.

“This is a move that will be enforced sternly," says Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon district, Rakesh Gupta.

However, the shop owners in the malls are against the idea. They say it will be a setback to Gurgaon's mall culture and will end flexible schedules for employees.

"We provide the staff with 8-hour shifts and they can take offs the days they want to," says

shop owner, Manan Chawla.

Nonetheless, there is a way out for shop owners in these malls. They can apply for waivers under the Punjab Shop and Commercial Establishments Act.

Some stores already have this exemption and for them it will be business as usual. Meanwhile, mall hoppers have a mixed view on the forced closure. Some believe that the new order is already in place but it has seen a partial response. However, with shoppers thronging to these malls from all across the NCR, the possibility of some troublesome Tuesday’s looms large.
