Susheela's take on diasporic post rock

New Delhi: Those who've seen the film The Namesake must be familiar with remixed version of an old Hindi movie song Yeh mera deewanapan hai and wondered who the smoky voice belongs to.

The singer who lent her voice to the song is UK-based Susheela Raman.

Susheela likes to call her music 'diasporic post rock' and refuses to be put into any one genre.

"If some one puts you into a box then it is no fun," Susheela says.

Susheela rocked New Delhi on Friday evening along with her guitarist/producer Sam Mills and percussionist Aref Durvesh with Tamil songs soaked in Jazz and Blues.

And the audience was clearly impressed.

"One of the best concerts I have been in years," one of the people at the concert says while other added that he found Susheela's expressions and emotions very impressive.

And all because the singer believes in flux and fusion when it comes to music

“Rock music is almost finished. There is no new idea. There is no freshness and vitality. I think that will come with change," she says.

And practising what she preaches, Susheela has been experimenting with a whole lot influences from South African, Parisian, Bengali and Tamil, the language dominating her current repertoire.

"The Tamil folk stuff that I am currently working with is really like Blues. It is as intense," she adds.

And though awards may have been elusive since 2001, she's sure looking to go a long way.
