Mumbai: Mumbai Police claim that trouble between union and management of the maintenance firm Airworks was behind the sabotage of Anil Ambani's helicopter.
Two employees of Airworks have been arrested in the Anil Ambani's helicopter sabotage case and the tragic death of senior technician Bharat Borge who detected the pebbles and mud in the gear box has also now been confirmed as unrelated to the case.
The blame for the alleged plot to kill Anil Ambani by sabotaging his helicopter has fallen on the two men - Uday Warerkar and Palraj Thevar. With the arrest of the two men Mumbai Police claim to have successfully solved the case.
"We have arrested two accused involved in the commission of this crime," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.
Police say on the morning of April 23, Warekar and Thevar were sent to the Anil Ambani chopper for maintenance and pre-flight preparations.
Warerkar opened gear box and placed seven peanut-sized pebbles and soil inside the gear box. Thevar helped Warerkar in the alleged sabotage. But it was Warekar's lack of technical expertise that helped the investigators zero in on the duo.
"When you open it the arrow has to point towards the opposite direction of the head of the helicopter. These people did not know this technical thing. So they kept it in the same direction and that is what aroused Borge's suspicion. That is how he detected it," said Maria.
Police are also strengthening their hands with a series of cases that have been registered against Airworks employees for alleged attempts to defame the company.
In one of the earlier cases against Airworks, a brick was hurled at an aircraft parked outside Airworks' hangar on August 27, 2008.
On October 27, 2008, firecrackers were burst near aircraft inside hangar and then on January 3, 2009, firecrackers were again set off a fire inside electricity supply room that set off a minor fire inside the main electricity supply room.
Firecrackers were once again burst inside hangar's steel cupboard on March 6, 2009.
Police say that Airworks employees are angry with the management and have filed a case in the labour court for higher pay.
As a result Warerkar and Thevar indulged in the mischief knowing fully well that it was the Anil Ambani's chopper they were tampering with.
For now the duo is in custody till May 15 even as the Mumbai Crime Branch continues its investigations.
