New Delhi: A city court on Wednesday convicted a tutor of murdering a 20-year-old girl student of St Stephen's College seven years ago.

Uttam Kumar murdered Priyanka as he was in "lust" with her. The court termed the crime as "barbaric".

"I am deliberately using the words 'lust of accused' for the reason that he seems to have taken benefit of his solemn relationship of teacher with student right from the initial years when she was in her adolescence years", Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Bharat Parashar was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

He added that "the prosecution has been completely successful in proving that the murder of Priyanka was in fact committed by Kumar only, in a barbaric manner by causing numerous injuries by a knife".

The ASJ relied on 19 prosecution witnesses, including the family members of the victim present at the house on April 19, 1999 when the fateful incident happened, and convicted Kumar under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.

The quantum of the sentence will be pronounced on March 12.
