Mumbai: A city court has granted bail to TV actress Urvashi Dhanorkar who allegedly abused, tortured and even burnt her 10-year-old domestic help Anita (name changed) in Mumbai.
Anita recalled the three months of abuse at the hands of the her employer. "Maine khaya tha, to unhone mera hath jala diya. Gas pe rakh ke jalaya, (I ate something so she burnt my hand. She held my hand on the gas stove and burnt it)," she said.
Urvashi was arrested by the Mumbai Police after the residents of this colony rescued the little girl from her home.
"I thought it would be a normal servant-master dispute, but when I saw the girl, looking at her injury marks, we knew something was wrong," said Raheja Classic Housing Society Chairman, Bindu Bhosle.
The victim says Urvashi brought her from Amravati to Mumbai, on the pretext that she would be adopted.
"I was brought to Mumbai saying that I would get education, but she didn't do that," said the victim.
However, what lay in store was alleged torture and abuse. As Urvashi was led away by the police, the anger of the women of the colony was evident as they manhandle her.
Urvashi though continues to plead innocence, was granted bail within hours of her arrest.
"I am a victim of circumstances. I am always ready to help kids like her. I am not guilty of any crime. I have proof that she was bee stung," said Urvashi.
Her defense lawyer insists she is being framed.
"The girl burnt herself accidentally. Some social workers took advantage of this and registered a case," said defense lawyer, Nitin Satpute.
Meanwhile, the victim is being rehabilitated with the help of local cops and an NGO.
This incident has definitely exposed the new darker side of urbane India where even in today's time the country faces the challenge of implementation of child rights. Armed with a relatively weaker law that enables the accuse to walk out within hours of being arrested, one wonders when will justice finally prevail.
