Mumbai: Love them or hate them but you cannot ignore them, especially when they jump generations within a matter of a few months. Today most television serials are re-inventing themselves by re-inventing time.
So, the bahu becomes the baa and the son becomes the father even before the actors themselves have grey hair.
“I never watched The Bold and the Beautiful and Santa Barbara but I believe the father-in-law has slept with every woman in the show. Now, you can’t show baa sleeping around with men on TV. So, we deal with completely different issues,” Creative Director, Balaji Telefilms, Sandeep Sikand said.
Now, baa has been an integral part of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi for the last six years and has gone through with two such time leaps.
"Baa is jumping from year to year," actress, Sudha Shivpuri, who plays the role of Baa in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, quipped.
So, lets now take a guess on her age after the jumps.
"Let’s call it cinematic liberty. Baa is about 700 years old," Sikand said in jest.
But the right answer is that Baa is 104 years old according to Shivpuri.
However, this is not to say that actors like going along with it. The first casualty that comes to mind is the character of Mihir, played by Amar Upadhyay, who refused to age in his 20s. After him many others have followed suit.
The latest of course is actor Arjun Punj, who has refused to give up his chocolate boy image on the small screen.
"I can play the role of a gangster also. I can still relate to such roles but a father of a 20-year-old is beyond me," Punj said.
With TRPs calling the shots, channels say, a time leap is like a new season as seen in serials from the West.
For out of TV for a season break could mean out of the public mind. We don't want that do we now?
